The Dubai layover guide
Everything we check before we tell a traveller “yes, that fits”. Read it once and you will be able to judge your own connection — and you will know why we sometimes say no.
1. Start with total connection time
Take your scheduled departure time and subtract your scheduled arrival time, both in Dubai local time (the UAE uses Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, with no daylight saving). That is your total connection — the number most people plan with, and the wrong one to plan a tour with.
2. Subtract the airport
Leaving and re-entering an airport takes time: taxiing, walking, immigration, customs, then security, check-in if needed and the walk to your gate on the way back. Our estimate allows around 90 minutes after landing and three hours back at DXB before departure. These are conservative planning figures; your airline’s requirements always take priority.
3. Consider your luggage
If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you walk out with your cabin bag. If you must collect them — often the case on separate tickets — allow extra time at the carousel, and tell us how many bags you have so we confirm the right vehicle.
4. Check UAE entry for your passport
Entry depends on nationality, passport validity and other factors, and it is always subject to immigration approval. Use the official sources on our UAE entry page and check before you fly.
5. Match the time to the place
Old Dubai and the Creek are closest to DXB. Downtown and the Museum of the Future come next, then Jumeirah, the Palm and the Marina. The desert needs a longer window and suits mornings or late afternoons.
6. Respect the clock and the climate
Rush hour can double a drive, and from roughly May to September midday heat makes outdoor walking hard work. We plan outdoor time for the cooler hours and keep the car close.
7. Plan for disruption
Flights run late. If yours does, we reassess the time left and shorten or adjust the itinerary where possible; a delay is never treated as you being late. 30 minutes of waiting from the confirmed meeting time and normal parking are included.
